One of the most patriotic thing Egyptians could have done in the World Cup this year, was to cheer for Ghana. It was all loud and clear in the beginning of 2018: qualifying for the World Cup again after a 28-year gap was a collective Egyptian dream. Right before it came true, our hopes were all in Ghana’s basket because facts were facts: Ghana winning or drawing its qualification match would send Egypt straight to Russia 2018. Naturally, the only sensible thing that could have been done at that point was to add our voice to Ghana’s supporters, which is exactly why this campaign was created. The Ghana national anthem, its national flag, and a rewrite of a famous Egyptian national song all played a comedic role in mobilizing Egyptian crowds to cheer for Ghana against Uganda. Ghana beat our African sister and we both qualified and realized the dream.
